Creating a Goal Vs Creating a Wish

A goal is a pre-defined future point in your life that you want to move towards. A wish is a statement of desire.
A lot of people mistakenly confuse “wish listing” as goal setting. They think that just because they take time once a year to write down their wishes, that the life of their dreams will begin to unfold.
Its very important when you are setting goals, to make sure you are defining a goal and not merely stating a wish. Although you may not know all the steps necessary to achieve your goal at the point the goal is created, you will at least know the general direction and therefore you will be able to ask the right questions to get you there.
Here’s an example of a wish:
I want to get rich someday
On the other hand, here’s what a clearly defined goal might look like:
I am the founder of an Internet startup. I grew the business from nothing to a point where I raised substantial venture capital funding. I subsequently took the company public and took my net worth from below zero to over $20 million in less than 3 years.
So remember, the next time you take the time to set goals, make sure you are actually setting a goal and not merely listing your wishes.
